Winter hibernation is officially over! It’s time to bask in the warm spring weather, and what better way to enjoy the season than taking a road trip? There are plenty of amazing spots situated close to the GTA that make for ideal weekend trips. From charming towns lined with cozy cafes and one-of-a-kind boutiques, to more adventurous towns with hiking trails and water activities, take a look at five of the best spring road trips from the GTA!
1. Bayfield
The village of Bayfield is almost three hours west of Toronto, and about two hours from the Brampton and Vaughan areas. It’s the perfect distance for a road trip! Located on Lake Huron, Bayfield has charm and character that’s hard to come by anywhere else.
Charming boutiques, welcoming accommodation and delicious dining make Bayfield a must for a spring road trip. Stroll along the town’s main street and head to Bayfield beach on a sunny day! Plus, Bayfield’s Lake Huron is known to have some of the world’s most beautiful sunsets. Join the locals for their daily walk to take in the sunset in all its glory.
2. Elora
Elora is another great spot to road trip to from the GTA, especially if you love hiking and spending time on the water! Located just north of Guelph, it’s a community in Wellington County that offers scenic beauty and small town charm.
Head to the Elora Gorge, a beautiful conservation area with riverside trails and scenic views looking over the Grand River. You can rent tubing equipment or a kayak and make your way through the rapids, or hike the trails. Also make sure to check out the picturesque Elora limestone quarry. And there aregreat cafes, restaurants and one-of-a-kind shops downtown Elora!
3. Jordan Village
A quaint village that sits among the wineries of the Niagara escarpment, Jordan Village has a lot to offer for those looking to get out of the GTA for a weekend. With cozy cafes, fabulous shopping, charming inns and close proximity to wineries, you can spend your time leisurely and relaxed. If you’re up for a more adventurous trip, there are also hiking and biking paths to take on!
4. Port Dover
If you’re looking for rich culture, amazing views and a beach with lined with palm trees (Yes, right here in Ontario!), Port Dover is the place for you! Located within Norfolk County, make sure to hop over to Radical Lines Aerial Adventure Park for ziplining and aerial challenges, and you’ll also want to check out the Lynn River Falls and the Port Dover lighthouse. Make sure to enjoy Lake Erie perch and pickerel at a nearby restaurant, too!
5. Sandbanks Provincial Parks
With three expansive sandy beaches, walking trails along the dunes, and a number of ice cream shops, farmers markets and parks, the Sandbanks area is a great spot for a getaway. If you’re craving water activities, you can windsurf, sail, canoe or boat on the glistening waters. You can also take a short drive over the Prince Edward County for some wine tasting if you feel so inclined!
